Nostalgic ‘Roads to Rail’ Steam Rally returns bBigger and better than ever
A celebration of steam, heritage and family fun in Purbeck
One of Purbeck’s most popular heritage events is set to return in 2026, bigger and better than ever.
The much-loved ‘Roads to Rail’ Steam Rally will take place from Friday 26 June to Sunday 28 June 2026, bringing the sights, sounds and atmosphere of a bygone era to a new, larger showground close to Norden Station and Purbeck Park, near Corfe Castle.
Now in its sixth year, the three-day family-friendly event has become a highlight of the local calendar, attracting visitors from across Dorset and beyond.
More space, easier access and even more attractions
This year’s rally moves to a larger field, offering improved facilities for both visitors and exhibitors.
More than 60 traction engines, miniature engines, steam rollers and showman’s engines will be on display, alongside:
- Traditional fairground rides
- Trade and craft stalls
- Food vendors
- A licensed bar
- Live music throughout the weekend
The expanded site will provide more room to explore and enjoy the event’s growing range of attractions.
New for 2026: Heritage Brake Van rides
A brand-new attraction for this year gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy a unique steam-powered journey.
Passengers can travel in a heritage brake van on a three-mile, 15-minute round trip between Norden and Furzebrook, departing from alongside the event field.
Advance booking is recommended through the Swanage Railway website.
Entertainment across three days
The showground opens at 10am each day and features two performance and display arenas.
Opening hours are:
- Friday 26 June: 10am – 11.30pm
- Saturday 27 June: 10am – 11.30pm
- Sunday 28 June: 10am – 5pm
Visitors can enjoy displays of:
- Full-size and miniature steam engines
- Vintage tractors
- Stationary engines
- Historic commercial vehicles
There will also be a traditional funfair, food stalls, a real ale bar and live music throughout the event.
Fun for the whole family
Alongside the steam rally attractions, families can enjoy a range of activities including:
- Alpaca encounters
- Circus skills workshops
- Fairground attractions
- Heritage railway experiences
Whether you’re a steam enthusiast, history lover or simply looking for a great family day out, there will be something for everyone.
Travel by heritage train
Throughout the weekend, Swanage Railway’s steam and diesel heritage trains will operate between:
- Norden
- Corfe Castle
- Harman’s Cross
- Herston Halt
- Swanage
A special evening heritage diesel service will also run on both Friday and Saturday evenings.

Special events – such as our ‘Roads to Rail’ steam rally – are critical for helping to fund the continued operation and development of the Swanage Railway as well as drawing visitors to the wonderful Isle of Purbeck ahead of the main summer season.
