Comedy fans were treated to an unforgettable night on 27th March as TV comedian Hal Cruttenden took to the stage at the Purbeck School for an evening of sharp wit, big laughs, and brilliantly observed chaos.
Hal Cruttenden is one of the UK’s top stand-up comedians, known for his razor-sharp humour and clever storytelling. Audiences may recognise him from appearances on Live at the Apollo, Have I Got News For You, Mock the Week, and the Royal Variety Performance. His TV credits also include Bake Off: Extra Slice, Would I Lie To You?, Pointless Celebrities, The Apprentice: You’re Fired, House of Games, and more. Hal also wrote and starred in his own BBC Radio 4 sitcom, Hal, co-written with Dominic Holland.
Although Hal was delayed in traffic from London, the audience had plenty of time to enjoy drinks provided by the Wareham Rotary Club before the show began. Once on stage, Hal delivered a hilarious and relatable set, exploring the trials of middle-aged dating, the ups and downs of his divorce, and sprinkling in sharp jokes on current affairs—including a few jabs at Donald Trump. Even the front rows were not safe, with Love It Local director Malcolm Lewis becoming the target of Hal’s quick-fire wit!
Supporting Hal was Kuan-wen Huang, an award-nominated comedian, writer, and actor described by Chortle as a “Taiwanese force of nature,” who warmed the audience up before the interval.
The evening wasn’t just about laughter—it also raised money for charity. Thanks to the generous donations at the bar and refreshments run by the Wareham Rotary Club, a total of £600 was raised for the club’s supported charities.
