100 Years of Laurel and Hardy Celebrated at the Rex, Wareham
Full house for Laurel and Hardy’s Centenary Celebration – A Love It Local Event
On Sunday 1st February, the Rex Cinema in Wareham was packed to the rafters for a very special event celebrating the 100-year anniversary of the legendary comedy duo Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy.
The evening was hosted by Neil Brand, the acclaimed silent film expert, composer, and broadcaster, who presented his all-new show celebrating the timeless brilliance of Laurel and Hardy. With his characteristic expertise, Neil shared insights into why the duo’s comedy has remained so beloved, while audiences enjoyed extended, restored scenes from their classic films.
Neil Brand’s credentials speak for themselves: he has composed orchestral scores for films by Chaplin, Hitchcock, and Fairbanks, and has presented numerous major TV series exploring the history of music in cinema, musicals, and television.
His enthusiasm, knowledge, and wit shone throughout the evening. As a highly accomplished pianist, Neil’s improvised accompaniments perfectly complemented the films, enhancing both the comedy and the timing of the duo. In a playful twist, the audience were even invited to contribute sound effects during the second half, creating an interactive and immersive experience.
A Centenary Celebration
Laurel and Hardy signed their first Hollywood contract with film mogul Hal Roach in 1926. A century later, Neil Brand reminded us why their comedy remains timeless and influential. The show highlighted how the duo perfected their on-screen partnership: both characters often found themselves in the same predicament, yet reacted in contrasting, signature ways — whether building a house or trying to move a piano up a set of steps.
Audience members were also treated to some rare insights and early film history, including:
- One of the earliest clips of the duo together in the 1921 short film The Lucky Dog
- How their comedy helped lay the foundations of the modern sitcom
- A lighthearted look at rumors surrounding the pair, including a far-fetched one linked to Clint Eastwood’s parentage
- The biggest custard pie fight ever captured on film!
The evening concluded with a lively Q&A session, packed with anecdotes and fascinating stories about the careers and enduring legacy of Laurel and Hardy.

Of course, the Rex Cinema itself added to the historic atmosphere — it first opened its doors in 1920, meaning Laurel and Hardy films could very well have played there during their heyday!
