Reptile Survey and Heathland Species Guided Walk
Rare chance to step behind the scenes at RSPB Arne
Join a guide at the stunning nature reserve at RSPB Arne in Purbeck for a special guided walk. This is a rare opportunity to explore behind the scenes which combines a live reptile survey with an immersive look at Arne’s remarkable heathland wildlife. This exclusive experience will take you into an area of the reserve not normally open to the public, led by expert guides who will introduce you to both secretive reptiles and specialist heathland species that make this landscape so important.
Reptile Survey and Heathland Species Guided Walk – what you may see
During the survey, you’ll have a chance to observe licensed specialists searching for all six native reptile species found in the United Kingdom, including the elusive Smooth Snake and the iconic Sand Lizard. Along the way, you’ll discover how these surveys are carried out, why they matter. You will also discover what makes Arne such a stronghold for rare reptiles, and how conservation teams work to protect them.
Discover Heathland Wildlife
As the walk continues across the heath, you’ll look for a variety of species that thrive in this precious habitat. From Dartford warblers moving through gorse to fascinating invertebrates adapted to sandy soils and the diverse plant life that shapes this unique ecosystem. Guides will share insights into ecology, conservation challenges, and the remarkable adaptations that help these species survive.
