SUMMARY:Local history talks in Wareham
DESCRIPTION:📜 What’s On: Local History Talks in Wareham\nStep back through the centuries with the Wareham and District Archaeology and Local History Society\, as they explore fascinating stories from Dorset and beyond.  Expect a diverse range of speakers – from university lecturers to world-renowned experts – covering archaeology\, local history\, and heritage. Everyone is welcome\, whether you’re a seasoned enthusiast or just curious to learn more. \nThe 2026/2027 programme features a varied series of talks covering Victorian Wareham\, Viking Dorset\, local archaeology\, Iron Age Britain\, a deserted medieval village and the First World War.  \n🗓️ Monthly talks (Sept–June)\n📍 Furzebrook Village Hall\, Wareham\n⏰ 7:30pm start\n💷 Members FREE | Visitors £5 \nUpcoming talks with the Wareham and District Archaeology and Local History Society\nWednesday 16 September 2026  \nVictorian Wareham – Lilian Ladle\nWareham’s recovery and growth after the devastating fire of 1762 continued throughout Queen Victoria’s long reign (1837–1901). \nDiscover how the economy and social life of this self-sufficient market town flourished. New buildings appeared\, businesses prospered\, and developments in health\, education\, the railway and postal services benefited the community. \nBut by the end of the 19th century\, dramatic changes were underway. The Boer War in distant South Africa affected the town\, while the telephone and motorised transport had arrived. Life in Wareham would never quite be the same again. \nSaturday 10 October 2026 \n40th Anniversary Afternoon – Lilian Ladle and Julian Richards\nJoin the Society for a special afternoon celebrating its 40th anniversary\, featuring Lilian Ladle and Julian Richards. \nSeparate details to follow. \nWednesday 21 October 2026 \nViking Dorset – Dr Wayne Bartlett\nThe very first recorded Viking raid in England took place in Dorset\, and from then on the county was frequently involved in Viking-age activity. \nThis fascinating talk explores Dorset’s involvement in raiding and warfare\, as well as the establishment of important monastic institutions – including some with surprisingly Christian Viking patrons. \nDiscover how traces of Viking Age Dorset can still be found in some unexpected places today. \nWednesday 18 November 2026 \nArne and Stoborough Through Time – Ben Buxton\nThe history of the parish of Arne is full of surprises. \nSalt was produced on an industrial scale here during Roman and medieval times\, while the first railway in Dorset was built at Arne in 1806. During the Second World War\, the Arne peninsula was also heavily bombed in a single night. \nBen Buxton will explore the fascinating history of the parish\, including discoveries made through the Moors at Arne Project. \nWednesday 2 December 2026 \nIn Search of Caratacus: Great King of Iron Age Britain – Miles Russell\nAlthough little remembered today\, Caratacus arguably deserves the title of Britain’s greatest king. \nThis Iron Age war leader directed armed resistance to the legions of Rome for eight long years\, and his name\, deeds and exploits continued to resonate through later medieval history. \nWith the first full biography of Caratacus recently published\, Miles Russell will explore the king’s background and exploits\, placing his story within its archaeological\, historical and landscape context. He will also examine how the story of Caratacus evolved through later mythology and folklore. \n2027\nWednesday 20 January 2027 \nA Purbeck Village – The Afflington Deserted Medieval Village – Chris Tripp\nDiscover the archaeological and historical story of an Isle of Purbeck settlement. \nThe Dorset Diggers Community Archaeology Group was asked to investigate the area of the unscheduled Deserted Medieval Village (DMV) on the land of Afflington House. \nTheir research sought to answer two key questions: when was the village established\, and when was it abandoned? \nWednesday 17 February 2027 \nWWI – Steve Limburn\nExplore the history of the First World War through an intriguing collection of artefacts and the stories behind them. \nSteve Limburn\, former president of the Bournemouth Natural Science Society\, will share his extensive knowledge of this period and bring along a fascinating selection of artefacts from the European Theatre for visitors to see. \nWant to find out more? \n📧 Contact: karen.brown68@btinternet.com\n📞 01305 812876\n🌐 wareham-archaeology.com \nCome along\, meet friendly faces\, and dive into the rich history of Wareham and beyond. \nNote: This event listing is a guide only.
