Victorian Wareham – Lilian Ladle
Wareham’s recovery and growth after the devastating fire of 1762 continued throughout Queen Victoria’s long reign (1837–1901).
Discover how the economy and social life of this self-sufficient market town flourished. New buildings appeared, businesses prospered, and developments in health, education, the railway and postal services benefited the community.
But by the end of the 19th century, dramatic changes were underway. The Boer War in distant South Africa affected the town, while the telephone and motorised transport had arrived. Life in Wareham would never quite be the same again.

Salt was produced on an industrial scale here during Roman and medieval times, while the first railway in Dorset was built at Arne in 1806. During the Second World War, the Arne peninsula was also heavily bombed in a single night.
Ben Buxton will explore the fascinating history of the parish, including discoveries made through the Moors at Arne Project.

Although little remembered today, Caratacus arguably deserves the title of Britain’s greatest king.
This Iron Age war leader directed armed resistance to the legions of Rome for eight long years, and his name, deeds and exploits continued to resonate through later medieval history.
With the first full biography of Caratacus recently published, Miles Russell will explore the king’s background and exploits, placing his story within its archaeological, historical and landscape context. He will also examine how the story of Caratacus evolved through later mythology and folklore.
