Discover 10,000 years of history beneath the landscape of Bestwall Quarry

Discover 10,000 years of history beneath the landscape of Bestwall Quarry

Join archaeologist Lilian Ladle for a fascinating talk exploring the remarkable discoveries made during excavations at Bestwall Quarry near Wareham between 1992 and 2005.

Covering an incredible 55 hectares, the excavations revealed evidence of human activity spanning around 10,000 years. From prehistoric hunter-gatherers and the arrival of the first farmers, through Roman pottery production and Saxon charcoal burning and iron working, to medieval and later agricultural communities, Bestwall was a landscape in almost constant use.

The sheer quantity of domestic, industrial and agricultural remains uncovered has provided archaeologists with an unusually detailed insight into how people lived, worked and shaped this landscape over thousands of years.

Lilian Ladle, who led the excavations, will bring this extraordinary story to life, revealing the people, industries and everyday activities hidden beneath the ground.
