⚓ Talk: The Destruction of Arctic Convoy PQ17

Step into one of the most dramatic—and controversial—episodes of the Second World War with this fascinating historical talk from naval expert Andy Boyd.

On 4 July 1942, Arctic Convoy PQ17 set out across the perilous Barents Sea, carrying vital supplies to Russia. What followed was a devastating chain of events: a fateful order from the Admiralty to scatter left the convoy exposed, resulting in catastrophic losses. To this day, the incident is regarded as one of the most troubling decisions in Royal Navy history.

Drawing on new evidence, naval historian, former submariner, and author of Arms for Russia and the Naval War in the Arctic, Andy Boyd offers a fresh and compelling perspective on what really happened—and why. This is a powerful story of strategy, courage, and human fallibility, brought vividly to life.

Thirty years later, the incident even sparked a high-profile libel trial—adding another intriguing chapter to this remarkable story.
