After weeks of relentless rain, it’s fair to say January and February have felt especially gloomy, with rising floodwaters providing little in the way of cheer. But brighter days are finally on the horizon. And with the new season comes the perfect excuse to get out and about. Our area is bursting with fantastic local events to enjoy – so it’s time to shake off winter and rediscover everything our wonderful local area has to offer…
Dine out for Mother’s Day & Easter...
With spring comes a welcome line-up of celebrations and long weekends — the perfect excuse to gather family and friends and enjoy the best of our local dining scene.
Local favourites are already taking reservations for Mother’s Day on Sunday 15th March and Easter Sunday on 5th April, so it’s time to plan that special outing.
Treat Mum to something delicious at The Kings Arms Stoborough, Grand Hotel Swanage, The Italian Kitchen (check out their Sunday Family Platter, Isle of Purbeck Golf Club or The Half Way Inn — all ready to offer warm welcomes and memorable meals.
Go out and celebrate Spring...
The new season is perfect for exploring the natural beauty on our doorstep. Check out our feature on Brownsea Island, reopening 14th March, with a full programme of events including a special history walk offering rare access to the island’s castle.
Wildlife enthusiasts should note Sustainable Wareham’s Nature and Wildlife Fair.
Guided walks and nature experiences are also available throughout the year at Wild Woodbury (Dorset Wildlife Trust), Durlston Country Park, Studland Bay (National Trust), and RSPB Arne, some which include heritage-themed walks highlighting the area’s role during WWII. (History lovers should also look out for the lecture series at Wareham Town Museum until end of March).
Spring family fun...
There are plenty of affordable activities to keep children entertained over the Easter break, including Rockpool Rambles and an Eggcase Hunt at Kimmeridge with Dorset Wildlife Trust (£4–£6).
There’s children’s trails and kite-making workshops at Durlston Country Park (from £3.50), and the Easter Adventure in Nature trail at Studland (£3.50 per child).
Looking ahead, don’t miss the community Charter Fair in Wool on 9th May — a lively, family-focused day of crafts, stalls, and refreshments.
Creative arts...
Art lovers are well served this season. The newly refurbished Poole Museum hosts regular exhibitions alongside permanent displays exploring local history.
Meanwhile Sandy Hill Arts offers an inspiring programme of exhibitions, courses, and workshops — from sea glass and ceramics to painting, dance, and guitar.
Be sure to note the popular annual Purbeck Art Weeks Festival beginning 23rd May, featuring exhibitions, concerts, and events across venues throughout Purbeck.
Live music and comedy...
Music fans can enjoy a wide variety classic Jazz from Church Knowle to the Swanage Jazz Club (p.29) and the popular Swing Easy Too have upcoming dates listed.
For something more reflective, Rob Halligan presents ‘How Did We Get Here’ and Wareham Choral Society concert. Not forgetting Sandy Hill Arts in Corfe, who hosts a diverse spring line-up.
Guitar enthusiasts won’t want to miss the Purbeck Guitar Festival in May, headlined by legendary artist Donovan and Juan Martin.
and Comedy fans can catch Hal Cruttenden — known from Mock the Week and Live at the Apollo — on 27th March.
