A unique and thoughtful creative workshop is coming to Dorset this spring and summer, offering a gentle space for people experiencing grief to reconnect, reflect, and express themselves through art and writing.

Set in the peaceful surroundings of Sandy Hill Arts, just a short walk from the iconic ruins of Corfe Castle, Grief by the Castle is a one-day immersive experience designed to support those navigating loss. The workshops will take place on Friday 15 May and Sunday 12 July 2026, running from 10am to 3:30pm.

Led by Purbeck-based landscape painter Jessamy Hawke and Dorset author Georgie Codd, the sessions combine mindful painting and creative writing in a supportive, small-group environment. With spaces limited to just ten participants, the workshops are intentionally intimate—encouraging connection not only with the surrounding landscape, but also with others who understand grief.

Georgie explains that while spring and summer in Purbeck are undeniably beautiful, they can also feel isolating for those who are bereaved. “This workshop series was created to offer a safe space to grieve, breathe, and express yourself creatively,” she says.

Jessamy adds that she’s looking forward to seeing how participants respond to the dramatic setting of Corfe Castle through watercolour painting, noting the cathartic potential of creative expression during difficult times.

Sandy Hill Arts, which opened in 2021, provides an inspiring backdrop for the workshops. Nestled in a wooded valley beneath the Purbeck Ridge, the site features lush greenery, a gently flowing stream, and abundant wildlife—ideal for quiet reflection and artistic exploration. There is also a sheltered indoor workspace, ensuring the day can continue comfortably whatever the weather.

Participants will be guided through a series of creative exercises throughout the day, with all materials provided. Hot drinks are included, and by the end of the session, each attendee will take home a framed piece of their own artwork—a meaningful reminder of the day’s experience.

Tickets cost £85, which includes all materials and refreshments. A limited number of subsidised places are available for those on low or no income.
