Bird And Recreation Initiative (BARI) launches Poole Harbour winter walking challenge

The challenge is for anyone who wants to have fun, connect with nature, and feel great as we head into the colder months...
This October, the Bird And Recreation Initiative (BARI – pronounced Barry) is excited to launch the third annual Winter Walking Challenge. Throughout the month they will focus on how walking, one of the simplest but most powerful ways to get active, increases your overall wellbeing, and how connection is key!
They will host four Saturday group walks over the month, each with their own theme to help deepen the connection to nature and the coast. On the walks they will be joined by local professionals in nature, recreation, and wellbeing who will share their expertise and help walkers feel inspired.
BARI have been growing a supportive online community through their Facebook page ‘Poole Winter Walking Challenge’ where they share fitness and wellbeing tips, post-walk photos, nature spots big and small, and most importantly cheer each other on.
Emily Henwood, Coastal Engagement Warden at BARI, explains: “As someone who loves walking, I know it can be a struggle to find the motivation to walk on your own, or to get outside when the days start to get shorter and colder. This challenge brings such a welcoming and social aspect to keeping moving and gives a much-needed wellbeing boost for the winter. We’d love to keep growing this community and lead more people on amazing walks around Poole Harbour!”
To get involved, simply join the Facebook group ‘Poole Winter Walking Challenge’! Here you will find all the information you need as well as Eventbrite links to each of the free group walks. Each participant also gets a free welcome pack with handy tips and information.
The Bird And Recreation Initiative is an exciting partnership between BCP and Dorset Councils to manage sustainable recreation access within Poole Harbour and to protect SPA (Special Protection Area) birdlife and habitats. Their aim is to work with local communities to create a wildlife friendly culture within the harbour so everyone can enjoy outdoor adventures whilst allowing wildlife to thrive.
